HOW TO SHOW APPRECIATION
TO YOUR CUSTOMERS
Our customers are important to us – so important in fact that we are willing to take a few extra steps to ensure that they will stick with us for the long haul.
Spending a little bit of time and money NOW simply means that 10 years down the road we will still be serving these loyal customers and they will be referring us on to their friends!
We all have that basic need to feel appreciated!
When we feel that those we do business with simply see $ signs when they connect with us, it’s not a great feeling. In fact, almost never would we return to a place of business that made us feel that way.
Statistics show that it is less expensive to retain a current customer than it is to find new customers. It’s very rewarding to know that your customers truly are confident in what you have to offer them and will stay loyal to you because they know that you truly care about them as a person.
How do you reward your customers when they refer you on to others – bragging on your business, the service you provide, and the relationship that you have?
The truth is, your customers will not refer you to anyone else unless they personally feel as though you truly care about them personally.
Reward them every time they recommend you to someone else. This can be as easy as sending them a personal note in the real mail. Write something in the note that shows them that you are in tune with what’s going on in their life. Mention their spouse or kids in a way that suggests that you truly do listen to them when you’re together.
Something as simple as a $5.00 gift card to Starbucks tells your clients that you truly do appreciate their referral, and it is very likely that they will refer you on to others;
They will not soon forget you when they know they are really appreciated.
If we take the time to build a relationship with that new customer who values our product or service, we will be spending a lot less time looking for “new” customers who are here today and gone tomorrow simply because we don’t nurture the relationships we have with them.
When your customers refer others to you and your company, that is the best gift they can give you.
Word of mouth advertising is the most sought after marketing plan in the world of business.
That’s why it’s critical that you have the kind of relationship that ensures that kind of referral from your customers.
This is not a superficial type of relationship but a deep rooted genuine kind of caring.
A story I heard recently shows the power of appreciation. In this case a realtor had sent a $50 gift card to a client he had sold a property to. Some of his friends and associates thought he was being extreme by doing such a thing. Several months later when this particular customer referred a new prospect to him, who just happened to purchase several million dollars’ worth of property, he “knew” that all he had heard about showing appreciation truly did matter. It all started with a good relationship!
That one gift for for $50.00 resulted in a HUGE commission worth thousands of dollars, as well as many more referrals. PLUS as a bonus he has an ongoing relationship with his client that is to be envied!
When we reach out to give to others, with no expectations, but simply because it is the right thing to do, we end up being blessed numerous times over.
Sometimes it might be a “stretch” to give a gift like this, but if we look around closely, there’s usually a way we can eliminate some other expense in our lives, at least temporarily, to be able to grow our relationships in this way.
In the long run, you will be showered with loyal customers who continue to refer you on. This of course will increase your income but even more importantly, you are building a sound business where you won’t have to worry about your competitors taking customers away because of the genuine relationships that you have with your customers who are truly loyal.
Depending on how much money you have in your budget to spend on your customers, here are a few things to consider:
- Your customers will rarely forget you when you take the time to send out personal notes of thanks and appreciation for their business.
- Remember the things that are important to your customers, including their birthdays.
- For realtors, a note can be sent on the anniversary of a home purchase. By including a gift card to Target or Home Depot you are showing them that you are in tune with what's going on with them.
- Following up with some type of action means more than a simple handshake at the end of a deal. When your customer feels that you sincerely care about them, they will not soon forget you, and it is very likely that they will be talking to others about you and your company.
Set yourself apart from your competitors by sending that personal note of thanks. Include pictures which will cause your customers to always remember you. Even a video message can be included to impress upon your customers just how much you do appreciate them.
